Welcome to the Library

This week we will focus on manners and behavior.  There will be lots of creative play and individual expression in the library.  That's easier to do when we follow the rules and know how to respect each other.  So, a big part of today's lesson will be practicing procedures in the library.  Not to worry though... it will be fun!

We will begin each week with a poem.  Poetry is a big focus on the ARMT tests, so the earlier we start understanding the form the better.  Students will love the crazy, fun poems I have selected for this year. This week our poem is Jack Prelutsky's Hello!  How Are You?  I Am Fine!  We will notice the rhyming pattern and talk about the surprise ending, which I know they will love.

Our story this week is Don Freeman's Quiet!  There's a Canary in the Library.

Comparing the animals' actions in the book to the dog in the poem will be our first introduction to nonfiction and fiction/realistic and fantasy genres, too.  We're packing a lot in this week.

Activity Time:  We are using folders in the library this year to organize our work. Last year, students were not always able to finish their projects during library time which distressed some of them.  Others finished early and wanted something extra to do.  Now, they will be able to keep ongoing projects in the library, if they don't want to take them home to finish.  Plus, it will be easier for me to prepare.

After the story today, students will decorate a name square for our library quilt display.  Early finishers can also choose to extend the story by drawing another page for the book where they invite an animal of their choice was to the library.  I'll help them write the name of their animal and their own names.  They can use their imagination to draw the scene.  Here's the story sheet students will use:

I wish the bird was yellow, but I'll print this in black and white, so it won't matter anyway.  If the light blue is too dark, I'll use Paint to color the pages white.

Clean-up will be signaled each week by a familiar song.  We'll start out using this one by Mark D. Pencil.
